Regular oral examinations and hygiene cleanings are key to preventing any dental issues and keeping your smile healthy. Our dentists at Peachland Dental in the Okanagan Valley can help.
Ideally twice a year, you'll visit your dentist for your regular oral exam and dental checkup. This gives us the chance to identify any oral health issues and develop a plan to treat them accordingly.
During your exam, your dentist will inspect the condition of your teeth, gums, bite and jaw. You may also need an oral cancer screening, dental x-rays and other diagnostic procedures.
Any part of your mouth or surrounding tissues can be impacted by oral cancer. During your exam, your dentist will check the gums, tissues, tongue, throat, lips, neck and face for any signs of oral cancer that the casual observer would find difficult to detect.
Keep your smile healthy between dental appointments by brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, and flossing at least once a day.
A deep cleaning of your teeth and gums helps to prevent and treat disease. Your dental hygienist will perform this task before or after your exam.
To start, a scaler will be used to help remove any plaque buildup and tartar. Next, the hygienist will use a polisher topped with coarse toothpaste to help eliminate any plaque or remaining stains, followed by a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.
Has your dentist indicated you or your child are at high risk of tooth decay? A fluoride treatment may be recommended. This natural mineral can help to rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel, to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
